There’s a race in Precinct 4 for Travis County Commissioner. That’s the yellowish-green area in the southeast corner of Travis County. Travis County Government has enormous reach and I get the impression that coverage of the policy choices it makes is rather sparse. So in the coming months before the election I will really try to focus both on the issues in the race, as well as broader ideas that Travis County should be thinking about. Input from readers is greatly valued and I promise it will affect what I research.
In the meantime, here’s a chart I created of the 2010 adopted budget for Travis County by expenditure category. Operations related to criminal justice and public safety are 40% of the County’s $656 million budget. Diving into that category will clearly be a priority.
